I've switched completely from Twitter to Jaiku, which is more reliable and has more features.
Now Michael Arrington at TechCrunch has a post on switching from Twitter to Jaiku among other things because of the things I've mentioned here.
He also names a few Jaiku tools that you can use.

Google's new search results layout kicks in

A Firefox preview extension that is actually worth using?
