I've switched completely from Twitter to Jaiku, which is more reliable and has more features.
Now Michael Arrington at TechCrunch has a post on switching from Twitter to Jaiku among other things because of the things I've mentioned here.
He also names a few Jaiku tools that you can use.

Have you noticed that a few sites have been poppng up that serve your twitts to both Jaiku and Twitter, this one is for those that refuse to choose.
http://twitku.com/
I haven't used it because I am satisfied for the moment with Twitter, so I can't really comment on it's utility but it might be worth a shot.
I think Twitter has grown rapidly over the last couple of weeks and what they are experiencing is common with any service that recieves a a high volume of traffic after some good reviews. What is probably happening behind the scenes are hardware upgrades and other things to make sure Twitter becomes robust and scaleable.
Just have a look at their blog and their jobs available toget an idea of what problems they might be having behind the scene.
Thanks for the tip!
No doubt the one of the biggest issues for the Twitter folks have been scalability. As far as I've heard, Twitter is the biggest Ruby On Rails application, and they met some considerable issues when scaling Twitter to meet the growing demands of the growing user base.
