In other words, they write code in their blog posts and are ... well ... geeks. Hence, the above solution is probably quite easy to implement. Nonetheless, hacking individual files is a no-go. Especially with the release rate of lately (need I mention that WP 2.0.6 is just 'round the corner?). I would go for the plugin solution any time. One plugin that I know of (and use on one of my WP 2.0.5 sites) is Semiologic's "<a title="Unfancy Quote Plugin for WordPress" rel="nofollow">Unfancy Quote</a>".
